Safety and Security Tips

Gypsy Scam Awareness

The Wayne Police Department would like to warn residents of common Gypsy scams involving individuals who pose as utility workers or contractors, possibly wearing a yellow or orange safety vest. Offenders may show up at a residence unannounced and inform the homeowner that they need to measure the property line due to some type of construction project or they need to perform unscheduled work or check on something inside the residence. The individuals will then distract the homeowner or take the homeowner to a remote area of the property while an accomplice enters the residence to steal the homeowner’s valuables.

Gift Card Scams

Protect yourself against gift card scams. Before you purchase gift cards, read the following examples; if any of these apply, you may be involved in a gift card scam:

  • People ask you to purchase gift cards as a method of payment.
  • People claim to be from the IRS.
  • A person claims to be an officer, and a family member has been arrested and needs bail.
  • People claim you owe taxes and threaten you with arrest.
  • People claim to be family members overseas who have been robbed and need money.

Financial Crimes

If you believe that you have been the victim of a financial crime, please come to the Wayne Police Department with all pertinent information to make a report. Contact the appropriate financial institutions and credit bureaus as soon as possible to report fraud discovered. The Wayne Police Department primarily investigates crimes that occurred within the Village of Wayne. Internet and other crimes where the suspect and/or transaction location occurred outside the Village of Wayne should be reported to the appropriate local jurisdiction or by internet at one of the links provided.

Traffic Safety

The Wayne Police Department continues to educate the motoring public and seek their voluntary compliance with the Illinois Vehicle Code. The Department recognizes the three “E”s of traffic safety: Education, Engineering and Enforcement. We encourage all citizens to understand the current traffic laws and drive in a safe manner.

Identity Theft Services

Identity theft is a growing trend that frequently involves crimes in multiple jurisdictions. Stealing someone’s identity to buy everything from cars, consumer goods, and mortgages, while leaving the victim’s credit rating in ruins is one of the fastest growing crimes in America.
